How to Elevate Your SEO and AI Performance with a Blog
Search engine optimization (SEO) and generative engine optimization requires a balance of traditional tried-and true practices and some new strategies as searchers use a mix of search engines and AI engines to get answers to their question.
Blogs have long been a recommended SEO strategy to maximize visibility and relevance, and provide a continuous supply of fresh, new content. When planning a website redesign or enhancing your current site, there are a variety of some best practices to help your blog stand out in an increasingly competitive search landscape, while providing value to readers.
1. Keyword Research & Strategic Targeting
Every optimized blog post starts with research. Each article should focus on one main keyword that is relevant to the core topic, supported by other related keywords to provide depth and context. Modern SEO and GEO strategies prioritize long-tail and question-based keywords because they reflect more natural search behavior. Tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, or Google Keyword Planner can help with exploring opportunities for high-ranking keywords.
Your primary keyword should appear naturally in the blog title (which should be an H1), URL, meta title, meta description, opening paragraph, and at least one subheading. This not only signals relevance to search engines but also assures readers they’re in the right place.
2. Create Content Aligned with Search Intent
Matching search intent is critical for ranking well and keeping readers engaged. Search engines increasingly evaluate whether your content meets what users truly want - whether that’s an answer to a quick question, an in-depth guide or a product comparison.
To understand this, distinguish between the main intent types for SEO:
- Informational: searches are focused on a user wanting to learn about something.
- Navigational: A user is trying to find a specific page or website.
- Commercial: Users who research options before making a purchase.
- Transactional: A user who is seeking to take an action like making a purchase.
Optimizing for intent also means structuring content for rich snippets and People Also Ask boxes. Keep answers short and concise at the start of sections, use question-based subheadings, and include FAQs when relevant. This not only improves readability but also increases your chances of earning high placements in search results.
3. On-Page Optimization: Meta Titles, Descriptions, URLs & Internal Linking
On-page SEO fundamentals remain among the most powerful ranking levers. Craft unique, keyword-rich title tags under 65 characters that are relevant to the content. When it comes to writing meta descriptions, keep them under 155 characters that accurately summarize the post while encouraging clicks and utilizing important keywords.
Your blog URLs should follow similar practices as your meta tags – keep them short, descriptive, and keyword-rich, avoiding unnecessary numbers, symbols, or parameters. Clean URLs not only look more professional but also give both users and search engines a clear idea of what the page covers. For example, “/blog/seo-best-practices” shows relevance immediately, while “/blog/article?id=12345” provides no context and can hurt click-through rates.
Internal linking is equally important. Linking between related posts helps search engines understand site structure, distributes authority, and keeps readers exploring your content. Aim to include multiple internal links per blog post, pointing to key pages that emphasize your most important topics. You will see we have employed this practice with this blog – and all others of ours too.
4. Prioritize Readability and User Experience
Search and AI engines value content that is easy to read and navigate because it signals that users find value. A well-structured post is engaging – it lowers bounce rates, increases time on page - all of which can benefit search rankings. To achieve this, break up your content into short paragraphs, use descriptive subheadings to guide users, and format key points into bullets or numbered lists for quick scanning.
Presenting content more visually can also make a post more engaging. This doesn’t mean making content into graphics. Instead, it means using CMS widgets that are inherently more visual (e.g., a pull quote), or other structured content options available to help break up long sections of text and highlight key information. With this, it’s important to use plain, direct language instead of jargon or overly complex phrasing, ensuring content is easier to read for your target audiences. By utilizing clear formatting and approachable writing, you create a better experience for readers and a stronger impression on search and AI engines.
5. Core Web Vitals & Speed Optimization
Google’s Core Web Vitals measures how fast and stable your content loads for a user - and it is still important on how a page ranks in search engines. Blogs that meet these criteria can consistently deliver better engagement and conversions. Web Vitals rankings are comprised of:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): This measures loading speed. LCP should occur within the first 2.5 seconds of the page starting to load for an optimized experience.
- Interaction To Next Paint (INP): INP measures responsiveness. To provide an ideal experience, aim for an INP of less than 200ms.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): This measures visual stability. Websites should strive to have a CLS score of less than 0.1 for better user experience.
Some ideal steps to optimize these areas include compressing images, using next-gen image formats like WebP, reducing unnecessary code, and serving content through a content delivery network (CDN). Regular testing with tools like Google’s PageSpeed Insights ensures your blog keeps pace with evolving standards.
6. Content Audits & Intelligent Repurposing
Understandably, content can become irrelevant over time. Outdated information, broken links, or irrelevant references can cause your rankings to slip. Conduct regular audits of your blog content (and honestly your full site too) to see which posts need updates, consolidations, or even if they need to be sunset and redirected.
Refreshing a post with fresh information can quickly boost its performance.
Repurposing top-performing content is another way to extend value. Blog content can be very useful across other marketing channels – from social media posts to infographics to relevant content for target marketing automation emails.
7. Incorporating Multimedia & Schema
Images, videos, and infographics make blogs more engaging - but they also require careful optimization. Any image requires a descriptive alt text for accessibility but also keyword relevance. Filenames should be clear, (e.g., seo-blog-tips.jpg rather than IMG123.jpg) similar to the practice of maintaining well-structured URLs. Likewise, videos require aria tags. If you are including an infographic, you need to have a screen reader only file accompany this graphic, to meet current WCAG 2.2 ADA standards.
Additionally, be sure to compress media files to ensure that visuals don’t slow down your website. Where possible, use structured data (schema markup) to help search engines interpret your multimedia, enabling rich results like video snippets or image carousels.
8. EEAT: Building Credibility and Trust
Search engines prioritize content that demonstrates Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (EEAT). This means more than just good writing skills. This involves showing expertise with author bios that highlight credentials or industry knowledge, and human writers, not AI writers. Additionally, citing authoritative sources and including outbound links to references when applicable will only help.
9. Responsible AI Use & Ongoing Optimization
AI tools have commonly become part of modern blog generation, but they should be treated as inspiration or assistants, not replacements for human writing skills. It’s fine to use AI to brainstorm topics, analyze competitors, or even draft an outline. However, it’s important to ensure that final content is written by humans for accuracy, originality SEO and brand alignment. As search engines crack down on AI-generated, mass-produced articles, human led blog writing ensures content maintains its quality, relevance and importantly - authenticity.
Blogs are a great tool in your SEO toolbox
If you already have a blog or are planning on adding one to your site, following these SEO/GEO blog best practices is important for success. Use tools like Google Analytics (GA4), Search Console, and paid tools like SEMrush to track keyword rankings, traffic patterns, and engagement. Continuously test different headlines, meta descriptions, and CTAs to see what creates better user engagement.
