Updating a locally grown credit union’s website to reflect their community and improve user-experience
 

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union was chartered in 1936 by ten struggling coffee farmers that could not get the assistance they needed from banks. Over the years, their membership base expanded to the entire Hawaii Island, assets have reached nearly $500 million, and they continue to honor their commitment to helping the local community succeed. Recognizing that their website didn’t reflect their values or meet member needs, the credit union hired ZAG Interactive to reimagine their website. The goal was to extend their brand to position themselves as the premier financial institution for Hawaii and help organize the site while making it easier for members to open accounts and apply for loans online. 

Aligning site architecture to business goals 

ZAG’s strategy team started by creating an intuitive site architecture strategy that aligned with Hawaii Community FCU’s goals of being simple to use across all platforms while encouraging people to explore the site beyond the online banking login. By strategically including strong calls to action, product benefits a comparison charts, Hawaii Community FCU has set themselves up for success in growing their membership base and loan volume. In fact, since the site launch, pages viewed per session have increased by 18%, average session duration increased by 22%, bounce rate decreased by 20% and new sessions increased by 8%. 

Enhancing the brand while conforming to ADA standards 

The design team at ZAG created an inviting, modern yet professional responsive design that represented the local Kailua Kona community and conveyed the sense of ohana (family), while conforming to WCAG 2.0 AA standards for ADA website accessibility. The result was a fresh, streamlined and inviting design that highlights key information to help the credit union become a go-to resource for their members and employees. To complement the design strategy and support local SEO goals, ZAG Interactive’s copywriting team rewrote the site content, evoking a warm and welcoming tone while appealing to their target audience’s needs.

Developing intuitive applications & integrations 

ZAG chose the Kentico CMS for this project because of its power and ease of use. In addition to leveraging built-in Kentico features, ZAG built a custom rates database that allows the credit union to easily and centrally manage rates. ZAG’s dev team also developed a custom employment application, integrated third-party financial calculators and third-party online banking and loan application platforms as well. The result is a scalable website that Hawaii Community FCU can continue to build upon as the credit union grows.
